Issue 9 — Aw, geez mom!

Welcome to 2014, and the sixth issue of Year Two! We’re halfway through our run, and we’re starting to put together our plans for Year Three. More about that next month!

This month, we have a pile of great stories for you, including two short-story-length pieces. In Steven J. Dines’ A Trick of the Night, we get a tale of the lengths a mother will go to to protect her son from his fate. And in Maternal Type, Lilith Saintcrow spins a cyberpunk story about a very different kind of relationship between a woman and a very strange little boy.

Our flash fiction this month features Lauren M. Roy’s Ex Astris, a look at the stars from the inside of a man’s head, and Memory Scarlett’s A Single, Stolen Night, which follows a young woman’s brief, twirling escape from reality.

And in Part Six of Chuck Wendig’s The Forever Endeavor, we spend some time with Detective Bard as he tries to tie Dale’s many threads together …

About the author

Brian J. White

Brian White started Fireside in 2012 with a Kickstarter and a whole lot of love. Over the next five years as editor and publisher – with the help of his amazing team and of Lauren, his wife and partner in crime – he expanded Fireside from a one-off magazine to a monthly publication to its current form, a site with weekly fiction and occasional nonfiction. Fireside published 150 stories under his tenure, as well as five novels and one novella. He is deeply proud to have had a part in bringing those stories into the world. He was gratified to have proved that writers can be paid more for their work than the industry accepted, and perhaps most proud of the #BlackSpecFic report that Fireside published in 2016. He stepped down as editor and publisher in the summer of 2017, but he remains an equity partner in the company.
